Do you find yourself having trouble sleeping at night? Do you ever find yourself feeling unusually stressed or anxious? Your cluttered space could be the cause of that. Studies show that the state of your environment can have a direct impact on your mental state.
Messy rooms and offices can often cause us to feel overwhelmed, stressed and anxious, without us even realizing. But having that “out of sight” approach won’t work here. Sweeping things under the rug rarely works in any situation and in the case of clutter, knowing that your hall closet is about ready to burst from your hidden mess will only add to your anxiety and stress.
Even small gestures like cleaning up your dishes, clearing away trash and hanging up your clothes can help alleviate these feelings. Plus, keeping a clean space is a form of self-care. You’re taking the time to take care of your things and your surroundings and it shows that you care about how your space reflects you as a person.
You can handle clutter and kick the messy habit for good. Here are some simple ways to start tidying today:
Find your level of tidy. Everyone’s idea of tidiness is different. It’s important that you know what yours is, and strive to maintain that.
Don’t let things pile up. Clean as you go! If you’re like me, you can become lazy. One thing I’m notorious for is leaving my laundry for the end of the week to pack up. As a nurse and in light of the pandemic, I’m finding myself doing a lot more laundry during the week. Leaving it for the end of the week to pack away often makes me feel overwhelmed. Lately, I’ve tried packing it away as I wash them and I’ve been feeling so much better!
Give items a home. If you can’t find a home, perhaps it’s time to donate it.
I Wipe or dust down surfaces daily (this also forces you to clear off surfaces daily).
Give these few simple tips a try and I promise, you will find yourself feeling a lot more relieved and happier!
